According to Nielsen Entertainment's third annual Active Gamer Benchmark Study:
Of the roughly 117 million "active gamers" in the U.S. in 2006, more than half (56%) play games online, and 64% of all online gamers are women. Moreover, while teenagers still constitute the largest percentage (40%) of active gamers, more than 15 million of those gamers (almost 8%) are 45 years old or older.
A recent study by Forrester Research concluded that the most successful way of reaching teenagers is by means of in-game ad placement or brand specific “advergames”.
According to Parks Associates, one third of all adult Internet users in the USA play online games every week. Online gaming has emerged as the most popular web-based entertainment activity – beating online video, music and social networking. The study found that frequent casual gaming grew by 79% year on year.
The above study placed the value of the online casual gaming industry at $400-$500 million for 2007 - with a significant percentage of this revenue coming from advertising.
